Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital needed an operable awning product to shade their Aquatic Center therapy pool and protect their patients from the Southern California sun. So naturally, they turned to Uni-Systems to design and deliver an En-Fold® retractable canopy for their outdoor pool deck.
Uni-Systems provided an En-Fold® retractable canopy unit 56’-10” in extension by 41’-5 1/2” wide, affording 2,387 square feet of pool deck coverage from sun and rain.
The architects at Perkins & Will wanted the En-Fold® retractable canopy system to have no pitch for aesthetic and therapy pool overhead clearance reasons. To achieve this, Uni-Systems suggested a “flat” En-Fold system. A standard mono-slope En-Fold canopy configuration is a horizontal plane vertically sloped in the direction of the drive beams at one-half inch per foot to properly shed rainwater. But a "flat" En-Fold system configuration features fabric beams that slope down from a gently radiused center apex, in this case at one-half inch per foot to shed any rainwater off the sides instead of the end. This solution neatly requires no end flashing or gutters because any rainwater falls onto the pool deck, which is already designed for drainage.
The completed En-Fold® retractable canopy’s unique bi-axially tensioned Serge Ferrari Flexlight Xtrem® TX30-Type III fabric spans over the entire therapy pool keeping Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital – Aquatic Center patients protected from harmful UV rays and rain showers.
