Uni-Systems is responsible for turning multimedia artist Red Grooms’ artistic vision into a full scale piece of moving art, in time for the 2012 baseball season. Engineers designed a 38-foot arm with a marlin mounted to each end, that is rotated counter-clockwise by a 1.5-horsepower electric motor. As the arm rotates, the marlins leap out of the water and return with a big splash. A counterweighted pulley driven by a 1.5 horsepower electric motor lifts the 26-foot long marlin 14 feet in the air where it does its backflip.
A seagull is mounted to each end of a 20-foot arm, and is rotated clockwise by a 1.5 horsepower electric motor. The six oscillating waves are mounted to cam arms, each powered by a .25 horsepower motor. Two 40-watt electric motors flaps the flamingo wings.
The sculpture has approximately 2,000 tri-colored LED nodes that are fully programmable, and can be configured into an infinite number of light displays. Additional illumination lights provide ambient lighting for night games.
